Last Friday, Oct 17, I met with Marie Whalen, the head of the SDHC Evaluation Department. A summary of that meeting is below.
Overall, I felt like the meeting was successful. The main purpose of the meeting was to make sure that we kept the lines of communication open. In that regard, the meeting was successful. We are developing a working relationship. While no decisions were made or anything like that, during my meeting Mrs. Whalen, we addressed several important issues. I was sure to make a point that our biggest problem is scheduling. That is scheduling the multiple observations during times that will allow us to demonstrate the items on rubric. In addition, I noted that I did not see the purpose of us having to do multiple observations; each of which has a pre-meeting and a follow-up meetings. Plus, on top of that, we still have a final evaluation meeting with principal/s and supervisor. In short, we are still spending a lot of time being evaluated.
I was surprised that after hearing our situation, Mrs. Whalen asked me if psychology staff would be willing to “give up” one of the observers. For example, are we willing to go without observations from our supervisor or our non-payroll principals? The down side of this option, is that multiple observers do offer layers of protection. The more observations, the more overlap in scoring, and the less likely that we will be hurt by a prejudicial score. I stressed that we wanted to be sure to keep our Psychology Supervisor as one of our evaluators, but I was not sure that it was so important that they do a direct, "snapshot", observation. I believe that both the supervisor and the principal should be allowed to base their evaluations on data that they gather from on-going observations - not snap shots.
So, with that in mind, I need some feedback from all of the members. We can discuss this more at our meeting on Oct. 31st. Which observer/s are we willing to give-up, if any? I suggested the Peer, but of course, that was not an option. Are we willing to go without a direct observation from our supervisor, our non-payroll principal, or both? These are some of the questions that we need to decide between now and when we meet again with the evaluation department in March.
Thanks all, and keep up your exemplary work!
